With the UrbanDig project (“Excavating ghosts of culture in the modern city”), the “ohi pezoume” performing arts company sheds light on areas of recent urban cultural history.
Coming from the metropolis of Athens, which is full of archeological excavations, the company explores sites associated with less known or salient artists and writers of recent history.
It stages site-specific theatrical, dance, music and visual performances that adopt a modern perspective on each site and its history, thereby developing the connecting fabric between the cultural work of yesterday and the cultural work of tomorrow.
Each ‘dig’ for the subject of the performance is usually supported by related activities (festivals, events, symposiums, exhibitions, publications) on scientific or artistic issues that arise in the research and development of each production.
The company has visited seven spaces in Athens and two in other Greek cities, and has created performances for four personalities relating to these spaces (Lapathiotis, Christomanos, Rodokanakis, Vizyenos). The next project for 2010 is UrbanDig 5: Dionysios Solomos, the National Poet of Greece and his work Lampros, in a site still to be decided on.
